- Questions to consider: Is there a relationship between a feeling of ownership towards someone and obsession? Is a feeling of ownership a feeling of power or powerlessness?
- Write a short outline for each of the possible essay questions listed under Homework 14. Please type up each of the outlines and bring them to class.
- Those of you who did not create a viral video need to put together an outline of the viral video you will create. The viral video will need to be up by the end of next week. You will have to find your own time to do it. I suggest that you create a page on the wiki to connect with one another.
1. Please read the Introduction and first three chapters of Naomi.
2. Please find a commercial on tv (or on youtube or anywhere else) that you think illustrates Joji’s relationship to Naomi. Post the commercial to the front page of the tainted love wiki (just the address please!).
First, some clarification:
…it was brought to my attention that a lot of you didn’t quite understand what the purpose of the viral video was. I apologize for not making the purpose more clear. Just like writing an essay, doing a viral video is an exercise is getting your point across to your reader/viewer. Just like with an essay or story, you have to choose elements (story, background music, camera angle, sound, etc.) that will each intensify or further prove the point you are trying to make; you have to follow some sort of structured outline (your storyboard, and the obsession commercial); and you have to do both of these things eloquently. Unlike an essay, a viral video gets instantly judged and graded not by me, your teacher, but by the millions and millions of people on the internet.
As with an essay, you each created first drafts. This will be the final draft. I won’t grade this one, but I will grade the next one.
Now, onto the homework:
1. The videos should all be uploaded to youtube by Friday at midnight (meaning, basically, Saturday morning). From then until Monday, you guys have to make your group’s video as viral as you can. How do you do this? Check your list. Heck, add to the list, if you want. CC me (at tdsmorris AT gmail.com) on any emails you send if you want credit for your work.
2. Check your views and ratings on Sunday afternoon. What are your numbers like? Write up a paragraph describing what went right and what went wrong with the entire viral video process, from concept creation, to acting, to editing, to “making it go viral.” Be sure to answer the following questions:
A. Did you meet the criteria you set for creating a viral video as written on the class wiki? Give specific examples of you following or not following your own criteria.
B. What about your video looks very much like the obsession commercials? What about your video could have been improved to make it look more like the obsession commercials? What does this tell you about preparation for your next viral video? What changes need to be made? What changes should NOT be made?
C. How well did your group work together? What role do you typically take in small groups and why? What might be some consequences of changing your role? What are some strengths you bring to group work? What are some things you think it might be helpful to change about your typical participation in small groups? What is one major goal you have for improving your participation in group work this trimester? What specific things can you do to facilitate achievement of that goal?
I want these paragraph TYPED and handed in next class. Of course.
5. You will need to create your viral video and put it on youtube by the end of the week this week. I may be absent on Thursday due to family issues, so take advantage of class time to work on your video. Neither your name nor any reference to our school should appear ANYWHERE in your video.
6. One more thing! Take a look at this article about Clive Wearing (the man without long-term memory) if you’re interested. This is not required.
7. Section 2 only: Please type up and bring to class the reasons your group believes Wearing has for remembering so intently his love for his wife.
3. Create three possible essay questions that require some understanding of any two resources we’ve looked at as a class. Some topics you might want to consider: How are love and obsession related? According to our resources, are family ties or romantic ties stronger?
- Create a rough storyboard for one of the obsession commercials. Your storyboard should have up 10 panels. Pick the most important 10 moments to storyboard. updated!
- Come to class prepared to discuss how each shot creates an “obsessional” frame of mind for the viewer (or tries to). updated!
