- Please work on your essay this weekend. Here are the choices.
Requirements:
1. Please start your essay with a simple one- to two-sentence thesis paragraph.
- A thesis statement must be arguable, opinionated, and SPECIFIC.
2. Topic sentences should mirror the thesis statement.
3. Please include one quotation with citation in each body paragraph.
4. Please write no more than 450 words. Please write a word count at the end of the essay.
5. Please include a fun title.
- Finish Baby Doll & Tiger Tail.
- Read: The Practice of Love
(as you read “The Practice of Love,” remember that one does not read philosophical text the same way one reads fiction. Try to determine the main argument of each paragraph. I would suggest that you even underline whatever sentence you think encapsulates the meaning of each paragraph, and then reread all the underlined sentences in a row once you’ve gone through the whole piece.)
- Then read this love story.
Questions for equestrians: What is true love? Is there such a thing? How do you know?
- Read to page 190 in Baby Doll & Tiger Tail
- Read Love’s Disintegration in Modern Society
-Watch Behind the Scenes of Mad Men
Questions for equestrians: Do you think that Fromm’s description of the disintegration of love in modern society is accurate? Why? The Art of Loving was written in the 1950’s and early 60’s. Is there anything about the opinions expressed in the excerpt that feel particularly relevant to that time period? Similarly, “Tiger Tail” was written in the 1950s. Do you see any relationships between the two? How does “Mad Men” fit into your interpretation?
- Read pgs. 119-149 in _Baby Doll & Tiger Tail_
- Read What Did She Say, Viscovitz?
- Write down five defining characteristics each of the setting, of Baby Doll, of Archie, of Aunt Rose, Ruby, and Silva.
- Look at this video (lyrics)
Questions for equestrians: How are each of the characters trapped in their situation, both in the video, the play, and the Viscovitz story?
Optional: If you’re interested, there’s a pretty interesting art exhibition about love by Francesco Clemente, Ernesto Caivano, Nir Hod, Vadis Turner, and others through 2/3 at an art gallery called Vanina Holasek, located at 502 W. 27th Street, near 10th avenue. Phone number: 212-924-0212.
- Finish Naomi.
- Read All That Glitters is Not Gold, Viscovitz
- Here are the lyrics to this video:
- Here are the lyrics to this video:
- Here are the lyrics to this video:
- Optional: More (live) versions of I Put a Spell on You (if you care; the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins one is pretty funny)
- Questions to consider: How are the relationships depicted in the three songs similar to or different from the relationship portrayed in the Viscovitz story and in Naomi? Keeping in mind the final projects (two viral videos and the guide to teen dating) what truths can you take from the songs?
- Please read pgs. 154-184 in Naomi. Read to page 193 if you are in section 2.
- Please look over the Forms of Analysis chart.
- Choose any two analysis methods from the table to analyze the relationship between Viscovitz and Ljuba in the two Viscovitz stories (from the last homework) OR to analyze the relationships between any other two couples we’ve read about this trimester.
You don’t actually have to DO the analysis. Just choose two forms of analysis. Why would you choose those two? Come to class prepared to explain which one (Hint: don’t choose “summary”).
- Pick a paragraph from Naomi that you think acts as a microcosm of the entire book. Come to class prepared to discuss WHY you chose it. Use one of the analysis methods from the chart to do so.
- If you didn’t do it already, please write up your outlines. I will collect them…
- Please read 123-153 in Naomi.
Some music for you!
- Here are the lyrics for I Put a Spell on You or I Put a Spell on You or I Put a Spell on You
- Please read “You’re Losing Your Head, Viscowitz!” and “How Low You’ve Sunk, Viscowitz!”
- Questions to consider: Is there a relationship between a feeling of ownership towards someone and obsession? Is a feeling of ownership a feeling of power or powerlessness?
- Read pgs. 80-122 in Naomi
- Write a short outline for each of the possible essay questions listed under Homework 14. Please type up each of the outlines and bring them to class.
- Those of you who did not create a viral video need to put together an outline of the viral video you will create. The viral video will need to be up by the end of next week. You will have to find your own time to do it. I suggest that you create a page on the wiki to connect with one another.
