Tainted Love 07

And that\’s not nearly all…

Archive for December, 2007

Homework 5

Due: January 8 (section 2) or January 9 (section 1)

1. Read the excerpts from _Modern Love_

2. Write a 450-word personal essay that uses the SAME TITLE as one of the essays in the book (essay titles appear in the table of contents). Write it from the point of view of someone other than yourself (alive, dead, or fictional). Like the other essays, this piece should reveal something about the character and use specific examples.

3. Read Hippolytus, another play that appears in the Medea book.

4. Continue thinking of ways to strengthen or revamp video 5 (section 2) and video 2 (section 1) on the Tainted Love Wiki.

5. Watch this video!

6. Ponder the following: How do Hippolytus, the Helen Fisher video, and the modern love essays reflect similar issues to those that appear in Euripides’s Medea? Are the essays and plays actually about love, infatuation, lust, or something else? Don’t forget to bring your book to class!

7. I have added all of you to my twitter account (you should be receiving emails about this soon. If you don’t see the email, check your junk mail box). You will need to log in, but DO NOT USE YOUR REAL NAME! Use the name you created for the wiki. If you have any thoughts about love over break, twitter them to everyone!

Homework 4

1. Begin creating your viral video. You will have class time to work on it, and it will be due at the end of next class. Don’t distribute it to anyone. We will critique your video two classes from now.

2. Take a look at this or this to help you decide what to include in your video.

Due: December 14 (section 2) and December 17 (section 1)

Homework 3

Due: December 12 (section 2) or December 13 (section 1)

In preparation for class, please do the following:

1. Do you think the Greek gods sympathize more with Jason or with Medea? Why? (Hint: Use quotes to figure this out)

2. Watch 2-4 infomercials here. Write an infomercial script for a marriage-saving product that either Medea or Jason would buy.

3. Go to the Tainted Love wiki and write what you think current-day teenagers could learn from Jason and Medea’s tainted love story. When you add your comments to the wiki, please sure to add something to the section “a note about this edit for the page history log” so that I can give you credit for your work. DO NOT use your name anywhere on the site. Not now, not ever. Why? Because it is dangerous!!!!

4. Research the term “viral video.” How does one go about making one?

5. Rewrite your first-person essay from this weekend so that it revolves around your “one, true sentence.” Also, edit it down to 450 words.

6. If you are interested in honors, please let me know. To participate, you must have the approval of last trimester’s English teacher, and you must maintain an average of B+ in the class. No exceptions.

Homework 2

As discussed in class, Ms. Morris will not be in school during our next meeting. Since we will not meet again as a group until next week, you have several assignments to complete.

1. Read this file: golden_fleece.pdf

2. Read pgs. 51-87 in Medea.

3. During class, in groups of 2 or 3, please create one-minute dramatizations of the reading. Be as creative as you like, and feel free to change the language, so long as you are true to the ideas of the text.

4. Please write a one-page, 1.5-spaced essay answering one of the following questions:

- “If I were in charge of the world, here’s how teenage dating would work”; or

- “How I can apply the advice from three dating books to my life.”
